Managing drives and volumes in Windows Server 2012 Core

Because I try to install only Core servers wherever possible, sometimes I need some command lines to manage the drives or volumes.

• Change CD-ROM drive letter to X:
  
  PowerShell

  $vol = Get-WmiObject win32_volume -Filter 'DriveLetter = "D:"' $vol.DriveLetter = "X:" $vol.Put() | out-null

  1 2 3

  $vol = Get-WmiObject win32_volume -Filter 'DriveLetter = "D:"' $vol.DriveLetter = "X:" $vol.Put() | out-null

• Get an overview of available volumes and Disks:
  
  PowerShell

  Get-Volume Get-Disk

  1 2	Get-Volume Get-Disk

• Initialize and format additional disk:
  
  PowerShell

  Initialize-Disk -Number 1 New-Partition -DiskNumber 1 -UseMaximumSize -AssignDriveLetter Format-Volume -DriveLetter D -NewFileSystemLabel DATA

  Initialize-Disk -Number 1 New-Partition -DiskNumber 1 -UseMaximumSize -AssignDriveLetter Format-Volume -DriveLetter D -NewFileSystemLabel DATA
